News Release:
Nature's Hemp brings sustainable 'superfood' to Canadian market

For Immediate Release

St. Catharines, Ont. – March 7th, 2008 - Canada became a little greener today with the launch of a new line of organic hemp food products from Nature's Hemp. The products, including hemp seed, oil, hearts (a.k.a. nut), flour, protein powder and pellets for horse feed are all made from organic, locally grown Cannabis sativa or industrial hemp, a plant whose nutritious value has earned it a reputation as a "superfood."

Nature's Hemp is owned by Jim Fannon, a well-known realtor, former radio show host and Green Party candidate from St. Catharines, Ont. Besides unveiling a new product line and web site www.natureshemp.com, Nature's Hemp has also developed an organic, all-natural power bar that's expected to hit the market later this year.

"Our mission at Nature's Hemp is to transform people's health through a simple, sustainable and tasty addition to their daily diets," Fannon says. "Eating hemp food products is one of the best ways to stay healthy, boost your immune system and fight illness should you become sick.

"Most people don't know about hemp's nutritional benefits, so we are using this opportunity to call on federal and provincial health ministers to speak out in favour of hemp as a healthy choice. Their support would help legitimize and promote a valuable but struggling agricultural industry."

One of the earliest known domesticated plants, hemp has been valued for centuries as a nutritious and healthy food source, thanks to its high protein content and abundance of essential fatty acids (EFAs), including Omega 3, 6 and 9, as well as amino acids and minerals.

"Hemp protein is one of the most complete and easily digestible proteins in the plant kingdom," Fannon says. "Many studies, including ones reported in the American Journal of Medicine, have shown that EFAs have many beneficial effects, and that hemp oil is the best natural source for it.

"The essential fatty acids in hemp help the immune system resist and fight infections and have been shown to reduce the effects of arthritis, asthma, allergies, diabetes, blood disorders, depression, PMS and a number of other conditions. In addition to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, EFAs also help muscles recover from the strain of exercise.

"There's a good reason some people call hemp a superfood."

Fast-growing hemp is an environmentally friendly crop that requires little or no pesticides or fertilizers, replenishes the soil with nutrients and nitrogen, controls topsoil erosion, and releases a significant amount of oxygen. Hemp is not genetically modified and, unlike fish oils, does not contain traces of mercury. Contrary to what some believe, hemp does not contain detectable amounts of THC, and eating it will not make you high or lead to positive drug tests.

In addition to its use in foods, the versatile crop has traditionally also been turned into fuel, gun powder, animal bedding, rope and textiles. More recently, the tough, fibrous stalk and oil-rich fruit have found their way into paper, wild bird feed, cosmetics, biodegradable plastics and even construction materials and car parts.

"Hemp holds great potential both for our health and for sustainable agriculture," Fannon says, "and Nature’s Hemp is proud to play a role in promoting both these causes."
